Published: Haymarket Books - September 4th, 2014

Ever wonder what goes wrong so often in conversations between men and women? This hilarious and sharp book of essays tracks the missteps, the problems, and the dangers of what happens when men wrongly assume they know things and wrongly assume women don't. Each essay studies the societal problems and policies used to systematically silence women with insight, fascinating data, and great prose. Solnit provides a platform for women to finally speak up about this silencing, and by the end of this collection I had a completely different perspective on how I communicate with my coworkers, friends, and family, and how they communicate with me. Anyone with an interest in feminism and a good sense of humor should pick this book up. - Erin

I love Atwood's speculative
fiction because it always takes current events and twists them into
the future. MaddAddam didn't disappoint me with its
story of the aftermath of the Waterless Flood pandemic. I read the
first two books in this trilogy years ago, so I was happy this one
included a summary of the previous events. It's a satisfying ending
to a provocative dystopian trilogy.

This debut Swedish novel tells the story of Allan Karlsson who can’t think of a worse place to celebrate his 100th birthday than his nursing home. So he puts on his ‘pee slippers’ and exits via his window, accidentally steals a suitcase full of cash from a drug dealer, and ends up on a cross-country dash chased by gangsters and the police, while picking up accomplices and an elephant! This narrative is interrupted by his backstory: a Forrest Gumpian life filled with adventure that often placed him in pivotal moments of history. He saved General Franco’s life, spent time in Stalin’s Gulag after insulting him at a dinner, and crossed the Himalayas twice among many other exploits. Easily the most delightful book I've read all year. A wonderful story that cosntantly amuses - perfect for anybody who needs a lift or a quirky read. - Jamie

This is a fresh take on the well-worn "zombie apocalypse" motif that finds the world caught up in a plague of insomnia that has left humanity sleepless, violent, and hallucinatory. The story follows Biggs, one of the few who still able to sleep and dream, on his quest to find his wife who is lost amid a crumbling world. This is literary horror, claustrophobic and unsettling in all the best ways. - Greg
