In conjunction with Rediscovered Books and GoListenBoise, and with the support of other local businesses and organizations such as The Record Exchange, Red Feather Lounge/Bittercreek Alehouse, Boise Rock School, The Modern Hotel, Flying M Coffee Shop and many many more, Rock to Read’s goal is to raise awareness, as well as money to purchase new books for public school libraries, as the budget for Idaho Schools does not include any funding for new library books…for 2010 or 2011.
Initially, we plan on focusing on school libraries within the Boise Public School District and if the event is successful, we hope to be able to donate books to other schools across the Treasure Valley and beyond.
The cost of buying a set of award winning books works out at around $50-70 per school. Making an impact is feasible, and as the awards are given to new titles every year, the event lends itself to being annual.
With that in mind, Rock to Read views the November event as a prototype, and have plans to also challenge the local musical community to write songs based on their favorite children’s books, which will then be recorded and included on a cd which can be sold at public libraries, school libraries or at Rock to Read events. We hope to have another event in February/March 2011, after the winning authors of the Children’s Literature Awards for 2011, are announced. At this event, we plan to have the musicians perform their book-inspired songs.
