Set against the Canadian backdrop of 1938, this work of historical fiction finds a family of Ukrainian immigrants in hard times: racial discrimination, an every man for himself culture, and bleak living conditions don't make for easy living. But standing out above the storyline, for me, was the author's ability to create suspense between characters I felt I could reach out and touch.
