Staff Reviews

Eleanor is a red-headed misfit in a new school. Park is a quiet comic book lover and punk-rock expert. Together they find first love that shimmers thoughout this book like gossamer thread. The narration shifts back and forth between Eleanor and Park's inner thoughts, creating a conversation that feels so real you'll feel like you're falling in love too. One of the best books I've read this year.

— Erin

I LOVE this book!  As a "not-popular" child of the 1980's, I could slip right into Eleanor's character.  The author has an unique gift for evoking emotions and memories. This is most definitely not a book for only young adults.

Spring '13 Kids List

“Eleanor doesn't have much going for her. Life with her mom and stepdad is minute-to-minute scary and the kids at her new school have singled her out for torment. Somehow into this reality comes Park, who is just trying to keep his head down and not make waves at home or school. These two misfits fall in love to a 1980s soundtrack. With humor and unflinching candor, Rowell propels readers through a story of first love and the courage it takes to keep going when all the odds are against you.”
— Julie Wilson, The Bookworm, Omaha, NE

Bono met his wife in high school, Park says.
So did Jerry Lee Lewis, Eleanor answers.
I’m not kidding, he says.
You should be, she says, we’re 16.
What about Romeo and Juliet?
Shallow, confused, then dead.

I love you, Park says.
Wherefore art thou, Eleanor answers.
I’m not kidding, he says.
You should be.

Set over the course of one school year in 1986, this is the story of two star-crossed misfits—smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try. When Eleanor meets Park, you’ll remember your own first love—and just how hard it pulled you under.
