Meet the Bookseller - Kvothe - Monster Maniac and Eclectic Book Recommender

Describe what you do at Rediscovered Books in 6 words.

Cultivate my horde of young readers.

What was the last book you read that you loved?

Oh my goodness, I have three volumes deep in Jujutsu Kaisen  and it is killing me.  But like in a good way.  It’s a happy death.

What was a book you read on a recommendation from someone else that you wouldn’t have picked up otherwise?

What Beauty There Is by Cory Anderson.  I misjudged it as “another YA novel”, but a fellow bookseller put it in my hands and said she thought it would speak to me.  Lo and behold, it was my favorite book of 2021. (And Kvothe got to do a virtual event with the author!)

Favorite reading spot?

Flat on the grass in the sun, for sure.  I’m a bit of a lizard.

Book you re-read every year?

I’ve reread The Monster of Elendhaven every year for Halloween since it came out.  I love the main characters and returning to a world I desperately wish there was more of.

Favorite part about working at the store?

It always makes me so happy to see a kid take home a book I’ve recommended.  I’m elated whenever anyone trusts my suggestions, but there is always something special about seeing a kiddo’s face light up like that.

Do you have any good author stories?

Sort of related, but I met the illustrator for one of my favorite graphic novels Alabaster:  Wolves. He told me signing it would take a few minutes and then sketched the face of the main character in pen  next to my name.

How did you come to Rediscovered Books?

I actually used to go to a book club for kids/teens at the store when I was younger.  The store has been a part of my life since I moved to Idaho, so I was delighted to apply when they were hiring.

What is something unique to you that you would like people to know?

I make constructed languages for fun.  I think that linguistics are the coolest freaking thing on the planet so I like to thwart them just for fun.  I actually built a language for a friend who was homebrewing an original race in her D & D campaign.  So, yes, I’m a big nerd.

What are four of your all time favorite books?

Prosper’s Demon by KJ Parker

What Beauty There is by Cory Anderson

Who Could That Be At This Hour? By Lemony Snicket

They Threw Us Away: The Teddies Saga by Daniel Kraus
